The lamp is in it's original as found condition and I have made no effort to clean. Polish or enhance it's condition in any way. If the lamp is brushed with a brass brush it will make it look brand new again.I will leave that to the choice of the new owner. Some more information on this type of lamp. The 289-1A was designed for shipboard firefighting in both the merchant navy and the U. The lamp uses naptha which burns at about 20% oxygen. After a fire is put out and during the recovery from the incident, a flame safety lamp would be hung and lit so that the recovery personnel would know that there was sufficient oxygen.... Just like the canary in a coal mine concept. If the flame dimmed or went out, everyone either evacuated or put their emergency breathing devices back on.
